Saturdays 9a-1p "Roots of Rock 'n' Roll" Show
"Contrary to popular opinion, I did not know Marconi."
Bobby Box has worked in Albuquerque radio since early 1969 (somewhere before and after bobby worked in Lubbock, Sacramento, Austin, and Cleveland) starting at the legendary top 40 Giant KQEO. Bobby was only five years old at the time but he was on the work release program from kindergarten. Bobby later worked at other popular radio stations in Albuquerque. He also had been the booth Announcer for KOAT TV for a couple of years while also doing the morning radio show at KRKE, but after two years it became too much. Every announcement on KOAT TV was done live, no pre-tape. At the end of each newscast Bobby was required to say “KOAT TV Number One in New Mexico”, one night after the 10:30 pm newscast Bobby said “KOAT TV Number One In New York” (wrong state).
That was when Bobby decided on only radio to get him through life, and over the years Bobby has helped generate money for many charities such as Make a Wish Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy and many others. He has had to ride Elephants, Run the 40-yard dash against Governor Apadoca, Mayor Rusk and many other radio and TV personalities. Bobby, along with other radio and TV folks, played softball against the “Happy Days” TV crew - Happy Days won.
Bobby once owned his own radio station with his partners back in 1993 and 1994: KJBO (juke box oldies) the Nifty 10-50, a great radio station. It was doing very well, until 18 months into it’s operation, when Bobby’s partners forgot to make payments. Life can throw you a few curves. After leaving Kool 102 in 1997 for Big 98.5, life got a whole lot better. Working for American General Media (the group that owns Big 98.5) has been the greatest time of Bobby’s radio career, And being voted into the New Mexico Broadcasters Hall Of Fame in 2006 was a huge surprise. But an even bigger surprise was Sen. Pete Dominici sending Bobby a congratulations for his getting the Award. Bobby is so thankful for the many loyal listeners, and working for the best radio company ever, American General Media, and of course having a beautiful family at home. Life is great!
